OMG BACKSTREET BOYS!!! THEY ARE BACK AND I AM HYPED! I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN I SAW IT ON MY YOUTUBE FEED LIKE OMG! ヽ(>∀<☆)ノo(≧▽≦)o
So… ahem ahem. Anyway, I’m a really big fan of BSB! Like I GREW UP WITH THEM! Not literally with them, of course (otherwise, daaamn, I think I’d be the luckiest girl if that was the case xD). Back when cassettes were the thing, we had like a collection of BSBs back home (I’m gonna hunt them down again when I go back) and my mom almost always had them played, along with Air Supply and Carpenters, ABBA, Barry Manilow (they were like on a round robin basis, ’cause shuffle was not yet invented nor possible with cassettes haha). And over the years, I’ve really come to love their songs — their lyrics, their ballads, and most especially their harmonising! OMG! BRIAN PLEASE. (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)
Ahem ahem. Back to the review.
I’m really very, very hopeful for this comeback! Duuuudeee, I don’t know about you… but for me, even after all these years, daamn, BSB still have the stuff. It’s like their n years of break never happened. All of them still looked natural, or like how they used to be. And I love it! Just take a look at this MV they released two days ago (and one I will be writing a review about):
SEEEEEEE?!?! They still have that BSB vibe, that nostalgic 90s feel, and that harmonising, and drama, but at the same time, an instrumental that’s sort of modern. And I love it! (*♡∀♡)
Warning: Beyond this point contains highly subjective reviews and interpretation, dramatic notes and a considerable dose of emojis (as if there isn’t a hefty amount already (￢ ￢) LOL). Proceed at your own risk!
So, the song is titled Chances, and composed by Zach Skelton, Casey Smith, Fiona Bevan, Ryan Tedder, Shawn Mendes, Geoff Warburton, and Scott Harris. I’m not really familiar with a lot of these names so I really cannot say anything major about these people. Except prolly that Geoff Warburton, Scott Harris, and Shawn Mendes produced one of Shawn’s latest songs In My Blood and is prolly why I somehow get the IMB feeling from it. Especially that instrumental part at the start!!! LISTEN TO IT AND TELL ME I’M WRONG! HAHA (it really sounds like IMB LOL)
That aside thoo~ I STILL LOVE THE SONG TO THE BOTTOM OF MY HYPOTHALAMUS! I LOVE THE LYRICS!! AND I LOVE THE MV! o(≧▽≦)o o(≧▽≦)o
Reasons are as follows:
Ahem. So…. first off, I’m really biased with the song and the lyrics (especially the lyrics) because it’s coincidentally one of the things I’ve been asking myself lately. (￣▽￣*)ゞHAHAHA True, the meaning is nothing much, nothing too extraordinary. In fact, it’s simple, straight to the point… but it’s that that makes it very relatable. It hits right straight at me, and made me appreciate it in return.
Idk. I mean… as someone who’s in a complicated relationship right now (HAHAHA), I’ve sometimes been asking the very things in these lyrics myself. Like… What if we never met? What if I met someone else? I mean… what are the chances right? Things like that, it’s very simple but very impactful in a sense. Because it might lead to very different scenarios in one’s life. The possibility of meeting your destined partner. What are the chances that the one sitting next to you in class would be the one you’d end up with? Or, yknow, losing your love just because you didn’t do the plans you could’ve made. (￣ω￣;)
Again, what are the chances? But… one way or the other, it still happened. And you’re just left questioning it in the end… of those other possibilities. ( ´ д ` ) Or yknow, reflecting all these things with a smile as you pat yourself, damn I’m lucky. This song hits right straight at it.
That said, secondly… I like that “gradual” effect added to the song. I mean… first off, the song started with this electric guitar loop, which gave
you me that “everyday” kinda feel iykwim. (ᵔ.ᵔ) It’s gentle (for the lack of a better word) and repetitive, and it easily eases me on to that reflecting stage. Then, here enters Brian and Nick, with their tone as if they’re just casually wondering. The term is “casually”. It adds to the effect, until the lyrics becomes something like your own thoughts.
What if it’s like this? What if that? What are the odds? Who would’ve thought…?
Until the first beat drops in and Brian picks up the pace. (￣▽￣)
All that added in, and made this song impactful in my opinion. Mix that in with BSB’s vocals, and their great blending, and the technique becomes amazing!
For the video… it isn’t also that complicated to follow imo. Again, it’s in fact straightforward, and directly reflects the message of the song. It’s about a girl and a guy meeting in a station, and I guess falling in love after that. But, lo! At the end, we get a scenario of them not ending up together just because they were not seated in front of each other. (°ロ°) ! (°ロ°) ! (°ロ°) ! All that is an everyday occurrence: sitting across someone, sitting behind someone. But what are the odds even as simple as that could lead to something… more?
The latter scene (the one at the last part) is actually a bit…. sad. But if you were that girl, or that guy, you wouldn’t know it’d be sad, ’cause you have no idea in the first place of that alternative scenario where you ended up together. And so now, you end up contemplating back on your life. WHAT IF that was the exact same thing that happened to you in the past, present, or future? LOL
Idk. Listening to this song right now, perhaps with your love one, and you ask yourself. Can you imagine an alternate life where what if you just never ran in to him/her? Or that he/she never smiled back at you? What were the chances for you two to end up where you are now just because you were in the exact same place at the exact same time chemistry happened? Or the other way around and what were the chances he/she ended up being someone else instead? ┐(￣∀￣)┌
For me, Chances just augmented my questioning of these things myself. What’s even more wonderful is that you can look at it in a reminiscing, happy, I-am-lucky kinda way. Or see it in a sad, regretful kinda manner. I’m a little bit of both. ( ´ ▽ ` ) ( ´ ▽ ` )
Overall, in my opinion, the straightforwardness and relatability of the song are what made it charming. Add in BSB and it becomes classic!
(PS. I’m really excited for the album!!! (♡°▽°♡) (♡°▽°♡) (♡°▽°♡) And to think it’s five of them! ALL FIVE OF THEM IN THIS COMEBACK! ＼(≧▽≦)／)
